She also explained that it was Elias's incurable cancer diagnosis that led Gilbert to the realization that this woman was more to her than just a close pal. "She's my role model, my traveling companion, my most reliable source of light, my fortitude, my most trusted confidante," Gilbert wrote of Elias. Gilbert described the Syrian-born punk rocker, filmmaker, and writer as her "person" in a Facebook post in 2016 in which she let her followers know that she had ended her nine-year marriage with José Nunes-who you might recognize from the "love" portion of her best-selling book-and moved on.
